Carpet and Fabric Care Guide

How long will my carpet stay clean?

Just how long your carpet and/or upholstery will look good depends on a number of factors, including traffic patterns, exposure to soil and stains, and proper cleaning and maintenance.

Proper cleaning and maintenance

Daily vacuuming should include heavy traffic areas.  Weekly vacuuming of the entire carpet should be done, moving the vacuum over problem areas several times.

Spot and Stain Removal Guide

Generally, the following guide should be useful at removing spots or stains:

  1. If liquid, blot up as much as you can with a clean cloth, pressing firmly all around the spill to absorb as much of the liquid as possible.
  2. If the material is a solid, scrape up what you can with a spoon or spatula.  Always work from the outside toward the center.
  3. Dampen a clean, white cloth with the proper cleaning agent for the type of stain.
  4. Wipe area gently, working from the outer edge to the center.  Turn the cloth frequently and avoid getting the carpet and/or upholstery excessively wet.
  5. Repeat until the spot is removed.
  6. Dry the carpet and/or upholstery by weighing down absorbent tissues or towels to absorb excess moisture or dry with the aid of a fan.
  7. After the carpet is dry, brush the pile up.
  • Greasy stains require a solvent spotter.
  • Water based stains require a water based cleaner.  You can mix 1 quart of water with 1 teaspoon of mild detergent.  You might try using just the foam produced by the mixture.
  • Stains which contain both grease and water require both cleaning agents.  Use the solvent spotter first then the water based spotter.
  • Always follow label directions carefully when using any solution.

SPECIAL PROBLEMS

  • Mud:  Let dry.  Crumble and remove excess dirt by thoroughly vacuuming.  Spot clean with water based solution.
  • Urine:  Blot up as much as possible as quickly as possible.  Dilute stain with a cloth dampened with plain water.  Clean using a mixture of one quart water and one teaspoon vinegar.
  • Nail Polish:  Wipe up as much as possible.  Use regular nail polish remover, without lanolin.  Apply with an eye dropper.  Wait a few seconds, then bloth with a cloth.  Repeat.
  • Blood:  Blot with a white rag and cold water.  Hot water will set the stain.
  • NOTE:  This is intended to be a general guide for spot and stain removal.  Not all spots or stains will respond to these procedures.
