Does your vacuum cleaner work as good as it used to? If not, here are some simple tips that may improve it's performance.
Bagless vacuum cleaners can have one or more filters. The primary filter should be cleaned every time you empty the dust collection container. If you have a secondary filter, this should be cleaned at least once per week. Many times it is this filter which reduces suction because it traps much finer particles than the main filter. Sometimes this filter is hidden from obvious view, but is usually not hard to remove and clean.
Always empty the dust collection container and clean the filters outside. After all the work of removing dust and dirt from your home, you do not want to recontaminate it by cleaning the filter indoors!
Another often overlooked problem that can develop on any vacuum is that the belt stretches out. In time you may notice that the beater bar (if equipped with one) doesn't seem to turn like it used to. It will always run when off the carpet, but as soon as pressure is applied it could almost come to a complete stop. If you buy a new belt, compare the old one with the new one. You may be surprised at the difference!
If you use a vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag, don't wait until the bag is bursting to change it. As the bag gets full, it loses suction. Also, don't try to re-use an old bag. There are too many small particles trapped in the pores of the bag. Even though you can't see it, they are there. Do yourself a favor and throw the bag away when used and put in a fresh, new one.
